Restoration of Endangered Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis) in the Wetzin'Kwa Community Forest and Environs

The purpose of this project is to conserve the endangered whitebark pine ecosystems within and near the Wetzin'Kwa Community Forest by planting nursery-grown seedlings that are resistant to the introduced fungus White Pine Blister Rust. This project aims to support the ecological diversity, wildlife habitat, and cultural significance of whitebark pine while addressing its endangered status. The project has three phases: Phase 1 involves maintaining existing trial sites, Phase 2 focuses on collecting seeds and growing seedlings for future plantings, and Phase 3 aims to contribute to the collection of rust-resistant seeds. The project's objectives include maintaining and expanding whitebark pine restoration trials, providing local seeds for nursery stock, and selecting rust-resistant planting stock for future restoration efforts. This collaborative effort benefits the environment, local communities, recreational users, and wildlife populations while addressing the challenges posed by the whitebark pine's endangerment.
