FAQ
What are Datasets?
In the context of the BVRC DataHub, the word “dataset” is used to describe the unique instance/host webpage for a specific set of information (single report or paper and supplementary files if any). A “resource” refers to the file(s) associated with the dataset; a dataset can have one or more resources. See “What are the parts of a dataset?” tab for additional information.
What are Collections?
Collections are used to group datasets by topic to create a ‘mini-library’ and landing page for ease of browsing. Examples of collections include Grizzly Bear, Caribou, and Whitebark Pine. Collections are also used to group datasets associated with select BVRC researchers. A dataset can belong to multiple collections.
What are Tags?
Tags are the main keywords used to describe a dataset. Tags can be the same or more specific than collection topics and are useful for searching and filtering datasets based by specific terms or topics (silviculture, monitoring, climate change, sortie-nd, etc).
What are Organizations? And how do they differ from Collections?
Organizations represent the principal organization, institution, or company that produced or funded a dataset. Any additional institutions associated with a particular dataset is listed under “Affiliated Institutions” on the dataset page.
Organizations differ from collections in that organizations are usually the main institution that funds, produces, or receives the data in the dataset while collections are the subjects or authors of the dataset. Additionally, only one organization can be attached to a dataset whereas a dataset can have multiple collections.
