This research framework focuses on landscape ecology in the west-central forests of British Columbia. It aims to address the knowledge priorities of resource managers while advancing scientific development. Key landscape characteristics for forest management include fragmentation, old growth forest attributes, and disturbance. Research priorities involve understanding the functioning of natural systems, limits to ecological functioning, and ecological responses to forest management. Current concerns include the impacts of mountain pine beetle disturbance and the development of relevant indicators of ecosystem functioning. Enhancing synthesis of existing research, interdisciplinary field sites, and landscape modeling are identified as opportunities to improve understanding and enhance landscape management in west-central BC forests.
