      "description": "This collection houses work done by researcher

Kira Hoffman.\r\n\r\nDr. Kira Hoffman is an ecologist, conservationist

and former wildland firefighter who was born and raised in Smithers.

Hoffman's research focuses on how humans have used fire for millennia 
            
18
to manage and enhance their natural surroundings. Combined with 
            
19
traditional ecological knowledge, she uses science to understand how 
            
20
present-day forests have been shaped by indigenous management 
            
21
techniques such as burning, fertilizing and transplanting. From field 
            
22
expeditions to historical photograph interpretation and contemporary 
            
23
satellite imagery, her methods also integrate a range of disciplines 
            
24
including botany, archaeology and cultural anthropology, providing new 
            
25
perspectives on how indigenous ways of knowing can complement 
            
26
scientific findings. She\u2019s passionate about how people perceive 
            
27
landscapes, learn about their surrounding environments and connect to 
            
28
place. Kira recently moved back to Smithers and spends as much time as 
            
29
possible in the outdoors. She currently works an ecologist and 
            
30
